Scotland's Finest Golf Courses - Carnoustie
Carnoustie golf course which is also known as 'Car-nasty' is renowned for being one of the most challenging Links courses in world golf and one of the best in Britain. It has hosted the Open Championship 7 times and is set to host the event again in 2018.
The original 18 hole course layout was designed by Old Tom Morris and then in 1926 it was extended by James Braid. Since then it has hardly been changed which is quite astonishing as it continues to challenge the world's best golfers. Every other championship golf course has been updated to cope with the technological advances in Golf however this has not been required at Carnoustie which demonstrates how well designed this course is.
The back nine at Carnoustie is regarded as one of the greatest in championship golf as the golfer is required to navigate their way around the Barry Burn and the numerous pot-bunkers. Jean Van De Velde will be notoriously remembered for succumbing to the 18th at Carnoustie as he let a 3 shot lead go on the 72nd hole of the 1999 Open Championship. This lead to Scotland's very own Paul Lawrie winning the Claret Jug in a play-off and has subsequently been the last time a Scottish golfer won a major.
Carnoustie is a classic links course, it is not located right on the coast so unlike other modern Scottish Links courses like Castle Stuart, Kingsbarns and Trump International it doesn't offer spectacular views of the coastline. It does however offer the golfer fiery fairways, deep rough, numerous deep bunkers and challenging undulating greens which equate to a golfing experience like no other.
Carnoustie is available on Scotia Golfing's Ultimate Golf tour and Experience Scotland sample packages for 2015. For any visiting golfer it is a must play and it will truly enhance your Scottish golf vacation.
